Reverend John W. and Ruth J., RN Touchie

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Rev. John W. Touchie, age 91 on July 10, 2018, and his wife Ruth J. Touchie, RN, age 85, on September 2, 2018, both of Amherst, N.S. Born in Quarryville, N.B., John was the son of Herman H. and Ruby (Jardine) Touchie. He attended Mount Allison University and graduated from Pine Hill Divinity Hall and was ordained by the Maritime Conference in Sackville United Church on June 15, 1958. After ministering in several Pastoral Charges in the Maritimes, he began working with the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs in 1966, working in Woodstock, N.B., ending up in Amherst, N.S., serving as Assistant Regional Director for Community Affairs Maritime Region until his retirement. John was a very kind, patient and understanding husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a testament to hard work, loyalty, and commitment, both serving as a Minister and doing his work with Indian Affairs, both of which he enjoyed thoroughly. He would never turn away a friend, family member or stranger in need. John also had a great sense of humour. Born in North River, N.S., Ruth was the daughter of the late Harry J and Elsie Jean (McNutt) Dewar. She was an amazing and generous wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend. She graduated from the School of Nursing in Moncton, N.B. and spent many years working as a beloved RN nurse and a generous community volunteer. They are survived by daughter Diane (Dennis Graves), Fredericton, N.B.; sons John (Lisa Deyarmond), Truro, N.S., and Andrew (Wanda Kierstead), Amherst, N.S.; 4 grandchildren, Sara (Craig) Barnett, Adam, Logan and Luke; 3 great grandchildren, Aidan, Cohen, and Ewan. Arrangements were entrusted into the care and direction of Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St, Amherst, NS (902-667-8777), there funeral services have taken place. They are buried side by side in the Crossroads Cemetery, Valley, N.S. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of the Touchie’s may do so to the Alzheimer Society, or the charity of your choice.
