Joseph ‘Kevin’ Knowles

Joseph ‘Kevin’ Knowles

Date de décès : 6 septembre 2018

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our adored father, Poppy, brother and friend Joseph ‘Kevin’ Knowles, (affectionately referred to as Mr. Knowles by his former students) on Thursday, September 6, 2018.
Kevin is survived by his daughters, Julia (Tony) Hynes and Leah Knowles; grandchildren, Jeanie and Gabriel Hynes; life partner and soulmate, Norma Peach; brothers, Charlie (Marg) Knowles, George (Lynn) Knowles; sisters, Marjorie Knowles and Doris (Martin) Fulmore; nephews, Paul, Andrew and Brennan, and niece, Andrea Knowles.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife, our Mum, the lovely Jean Anne (Wilson) Knowles, and his parents, Margery and Joseph Knowles.
Dad had a long and successful teaching career in the Glace Bay school system for 35 years teaching at New Aberdeen School, Caledonia School and Glace Bay Elementary.
To us he seemed 10 feet tall and bulletproof. He could skate faster than the wind. He was the person to call whenever you had a problem and needed guidance and strength and maybe a sarcastic comment to remind you not to take life so seriously. He often joked that he was surrounded by women his whole life who liked to vent to him. We were the cause of that salt and pepper hair and the laugh lines around those beautiful blue eyes. He ended every conversation with the words “Carry On” which seems especially hard to imagine now without him.
He enjoyed all sports, especially hockey as a player, coach and for many years as a referee. He had the time of his life with his buddies in the “Huff and Puff” league and made many friends there. His passion was hunting. He loved to walk across the Sand Lake barren with his friend Billy MacNeil.
Above all he was and always will be Poppy. He beamed with pride at all of Jeanie’s accomplishments and not only taught her how to make the best cinnamon rolls and shortbread cookies but to react to life’s challenges with self-respect and calm. He was a best friend to Gabe, never missing a hockey practice or game. Those two share a bond that can’t be broken. Gabe has his big heart and sense of humor and his protective nature for the girls in his family. Gifts to last a lifetime.
A fighter to the very end. He did it his way and we will carry on because that is what he raised us to do. Love cannot be lost.
Please come celebrate his life with us in the best way we can think of. A family skate at the Membertou Wellness Centre on Sunday, September 16, 2018 from 11-12 a.m., reception from 11-1.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre in his memory.
Online condolences may be made to the family at www.pattenfuneral.com.
