Ray MacEwen was born on December 5, 1923 at St. Peters Bay, Prince Edward Island, Canada to Charles Clifford and Emily Edith (James) MacEwen. He died June 7, 2018 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. In his youth in Canada, Almon Ray was known as "Ray", and in the La Crosse area Ray was known as "Mac" or "Dr. ARM". As a child, Ray learned volumes of poetry and retained the memory of verses well into later life. This all happened in a one room school with ten grades and one teacher. After attending primary and secondary schools in St. Peters Bay, Ray received his pre-medical education at Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. He attended medical school at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia and received his Medical Licentiate from the Medical Counsel of Canada in 1951. He practiced medicine at Camp Hill Veterans' Hospital in Halifax from 1950 to 1951 and completed post graduate specialization in Urology at Victoria General Hospital in Halifax in 1953. By means of a fellowship, Ray traveled to Chicago to train under cancer researcher and Nobel Laureate, Dr. Charles Huggins at the University of Chicago from 1953 to 1954. In 1954 Ray traveled to La Crosse, Wisconsin to enter the first residency program under the esteemed guidance of Dr. Alf Gundersen at Gundersen Clinic/Lutheran Hospital. Ray joined the Gundersen Clinic medical staff in the Department of Urology in 1955. Ray greatly enjoyed the warmth and camaraderie of his colleagues and the staff. Ray was a member of the local, state and national AMA from 1955 to 1988. Ray was a member of the North Central section of the AUA and the Wisconsin State Urology Society from 1958 to the present. He received his board certification in Urology in the late 1960's while working at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital. In 1981 Ray was appointed Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Urology at the University of Wisconsin Medical School. The position was held until his retirement in 1988 from Gundersen Lutheran Hospital. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth (Jostad) on December 12, 1958. From that union four wonderful children resulted, and later wonderful spouses joined the family. Ray is survived by his wife, Elizabeth and his children: Mary and Jeff Brieske, Emily MacEwen, Andrew and Betty (Eternicka) MacEwen, and John and Dawn (Luhman) McEwen; grandchildren: Rachelle, Brock and Colin; and greatgrandchildren: McKenzie and Logan. Ray is further survived by his beloved sisters: Dorothy Dunning, Marion Johnson and Shirley MacKenzie; sisters-in-law: Allegra Silberstein, Jeannine Jostad and Diane Jostad; and many nieces and nephews. Ray was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Keith. Mac was a fun-loving fellow who was gentle and kind. He will be greatly missed.
