June Popwell

June Popwell

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of June Rose (Weatherbee) Popwell, age 65, at the Glace Bay General Hospital on Friday, September 14, 2018, with her loving husband, Leo, daughters, Paula and Ashley and sister, Nancy by her side. June used more strength and courage than could be imagined in her battle with cancer. Born June 23, 1953, in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Charlotte Weatherbee. June loved children and worked as a nursery school teacher for many years, before going on to work for Zellers and DCI Cleaning. June always looked forward to the Fall and holiday season. She loved to decorate for Christmas and collected Christmas decorations, adding new ones each year. Along with decorating for the holidays, she enjoyed baking all the treats that come with this season and planning, with her two daughters, what everyone would bake to make this holiday as special as could be. June showed great love and pride for her six grandchildren, Andrew and Matthew (Paula’s boys) and David, Abigail, Alyssa and Candace (Ashley’s children). She was excited to see her grandchildren grow and was full of pride with each of their accomplishments. June also had a great love for animals, especially her two cats, Boots and Badness. They were her pride and joy and she treated them just like her children. She loved visits from her daughter’s dog, Shyloh and while in the hospital, special visits from her new furry friend, Toby. This made coping with her illness much easier. Special thanks to her family doctor, Dr. Spencer and the medical team at the Glace Bay General Hospital for making her final months as comfortable as possible. June is survived by her loving husband, Leo Popwell, Glace Bay; two daughters, Paula McDonald (Chris), Halifax and Ashley Pickford (Joey), Glace Bay; sister, Nancy MacNeil (Vincent), Sydney; brothers, Billy Weatherbee, Halifax and Robin Weatherbee, North Sydney, as well as her six loving grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and extended family. Besides her parents, June was predeceased by her sister, Mary Smith (John), Glace Bay. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A graveside service will be held at Eastmount Cemetery, Whitney Pier on Thursday, September 20 at 11 a. m., with Rev. Myrna MacMullin officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca

“I am at peace, my souls' at rest,
There is no need for tears,
For with your love I was so blessed,
For all those many years.”
