Sr. Magdalene Lichacz, formerly Sr. Teresa Alban, 90, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the motherhouse, on Monday, May 23, 2011, in the 70th year of her religious life.
Born in Oakshela, Sask., and baptized Madeline Evangeline, she was the daughter of John and Mary (Wyzoski) Lichacz.
Sr. Magdalene entered the Sisters of St. Martha on August 15, 1939, pronounced her first vows on February 15, 1941, and pronounced her final vows on August 14, 1944. Sister worked in household management within various institutes owned or managed by the Sisters of St. Martha.
She received training and certificates in Home Nursing, Hospital Housekeeping, Laundry and Service Management. During her years of active ministry she served in Nova Scotia at Bethany, St. Martha’s Hospital, and Little Flower Institute in Bras d’Or. From August 1944 to July 1958 Sister Magdalene directed the farm and gardens at Bethany. In Alberta, Sister Magdalene served at Mineral Springs Hospital in Banff and St. Michael’s General Hospital , Martha Centre and St. Monica Convent in Lethbridge; in Saskatchewan, she ministered at St. Michael’s Hospital, Broadview and St. Peter’s Hospital, Melville; Sister also served at St. Pius X Seminary in Ottawa.
Sr. Magdalene was the sixth youngest in a family of 15 brothers and sisters. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by six brothers, William, Lawrence, Martin, John Joseph, Leonard and Aloysius and by six sisters, Kay Pasnak, Rose Marie Kardash, Frances Gillies, Anne Zaleski, Nancy Maier and Sr. Pauline Lichacz, CSM.
Sr. Magdalene is survived by one brother, Dominic, and one sister, Marie Arklie.
The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning Friday, May 27, 2011 at 1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil will be held on that same evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel.
