We regret to announce the passing of Roy A. Rideout on Saturday, October 6, 2018. Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Chesley and Isabella (Trenchard) Rideout. Roy was married to the late Phyllis (Commins) Rideout and was a loving and dedicated caregiver to Phyllis for several years until her passing in April 2017.
Roy had a lifelong love of learning and chose teaching as his life’s profession. He couldn’t walk through town without being greeted fondly by former students. He was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and served as president of that organization from 1986-88.
He had a great love of music and in his younger years, he performed in many Rotary Productions. He was a former member and Assistant Director of the Coal Town Chorus and past Director of the Legionnaires Male Chorus. He was a man of tremendous faith and was a very devoted and highly valued member of Newsom United Church. He was a member of the choir and served as choir Director since 1964. He was a member of Branch 3 Legion where he served on the Executive Board and Colour Party. He was a past secretary and former direction of the Legion Choir.
Roy was a member of Tyrian Youth Masonic Lodge for 46 years and has served as master, District Chaplain and Grand Chaplain. He served as Chaplain for over 30 years and was presented with the Meritorious Service Award. He was an active member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Canada. He was made an Honorary Inspector General of the Rite of Canada as a testament to his dedicated service. He was also a member of the Shriners.
He is survived by his brothers, Ralph (Debbie), Glace Bay and Doug (Port Hawkesbury); several nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Rhoda Commins, Illinois. Besides his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Clayton.
Visitation will take place at Patten Funeral Home on Sunday, October 14, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Masonic service will take place before the evening visitation. Funeral service will take place on Monday, October 15, 2018 at 2 p.m. in Newsom United Church Glace Bay. Reception to follow at the church hall. Memorial donations can be made to Newsom Church.
