Lawrence Donald Burrell Lawrence Donald Burrell

Lieu de naissance : New Waterford, Nouvelle Ecosse
Date de naissance : 22 janvier 1951

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our dear father, Lawrence Donald Burrell.
Dad was born on January 22, 1951 in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, to Arthur Burrell, of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Catherine (Gillis) Burrell of Port Hood, N.S.
He is survived by his two loving daughters, Lauren Burrell (Nathan) and Lenore Jackson (Chris); grandchildren, Benjiman Burrell and Leah Jackson; sisters, Mary Gunn, Helen Burrell, Dorothy Williams and Gloria Burrell; brother, William Burrell; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins, and his former wife, Shirley (Peters) Aucoin.
He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Catherine; brothers, Arthur, George, Robert, and sister, Ruth Grabell (Bob).
Lawrence “Larry” grew up in Scotchtown, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, eventually moving to Toronto as a teen. Larry moved back to Cape Breton in his 20s where he continued to reside until his passing. Though he was born in Canada, Dad was extremely proud of his American roots and was a United States history enthusiast.
Our dad had a creative, entrepreneurial spirit, running several successful businesses over the years, and, in 2006, he became a pioneer when he brought healthy, premium pet food and pet products to Cape Breton Island. River Pet Supplies was Dad’s passion for the last 12 years. He thoroughly enjoyed serving his loyal customer base of both human and furry beings. Larry also showed his love for animals by regularly donating to the Feral Cat Society of Cape Breton and taking care of a feral cat colony on his own property.
Besides business, Dad was very passionate about music and enjoyed writing songs, playing guitar, listening to folk rock of the 1960s, and taking summer trips with family to Port Hood, N.S. Dad also loved a good cup of coffee and enjoyed spending his mornings socializing with friends at the Bean Bank, and, in later years, the Ugly Mugg.
Our father was a beautiful soul with tremendous love and devotion to his family. Dad was a gentle, kind, generous and thoughtful father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend and he lived his life with joy, authenticity and integrity. He had a keen wit and an enthusiasm for living that was both uplifting and inspiring.
We are devastated by the loss of our father and grandfather, but we are also joyous to have had our lives forever touched by him. He will be forever missed by his family and many friends.
We are very grateful for the services of Palliative Care, Cape Breton Cancer Centre, VON, Cape Breton County Homemakers, Home Instead, caregivers Jay, Cherito, and John, and all the help given by Dad’s loyal friend and store manager, Bob Csernyik. We would also like to thank Dr. Susan McLeod for being an attentive and compassionate doctor.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation for Larry will be held on Friday, December 21, 2018 from 6-9 p.m. at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, with funeral service to be held the following day, Saturday Dec. 22, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cape Breton Cancer Center, the Feral Cat Society, or a charity of your choice.
May you be happy and free, Dad, in heaven with your mother and loved ones who have passed before you. We love you always and forever and will hold you in our hearts until we meet again.
