Eva ‘Babe’ Ruth (Nichols) Hollohan

Eva ‘Babe’ Ruth (Nichols) Hollohan

Date de décès : 20 décembre 2018

We regret to announce the passing of Eva ‘Babe’ Ruth (Nichols) Hollohan, an incredible mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dear friend. Mom was diagnosed with dementia five years ago and struggled against it with all her considerable might. She succumbed to the ravages of this disease and died quietly, on Thursday, December 20, with her dear daughter Dawn at her side. Babe was born in Whitney Pier on April 1, 1933; and she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mom was predeceased by her parents, George Nichols and Wilhemena (French) Nichols; brothers, Wes, Charles, Gerry and Walter, and sisters, Sue, Ola, Edna, Kay, Nellie, Dot and Liz.
She was also predeceased by her loving husband, Jim (2001); her son, Jimmy (2013); son-in-law, Tim Sutherland (2007).
Babe is survived by her daughter, Dawn; son, Bill, and wonderful daughters-in-law, Deno and Jenny. She was “the Nan” to grandchildren, Kerry, Michelle, Kristen, Alexis, Josie, Janel, James, Ryan and Jessica, and sixteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Vickie Nichols, Madeline Moss and Margie Gallivan; brother-in-law, Ted (Joan) Hollohan, and many nieces and nephews.
Growing up in the Pier, Mom attended Whitney School and graduated from Sydney Academy. She participated in whatever sports were available and loved to skate and bowl. Mom was known to play the odd game of Bingo and Rummoli, was an astute Tarabish player, with her partner Shirley, and came to be particularly fond of poker. Card nights at Lynne Drive and Ben Eion with the MacNeils, Colemans, Turnbulls, Delorenzos were filled with great food, a wee drink, and always, laughter. Mom and Dad enjoyed lasting friendships with many wonderful people, all of whom they held dear to their hearts. We, too, hold you dear. Her greatest pleasure was always the time spent with her family at many, many gatherings she orchestrated.
We would like to thank the staffs of My Cape Breton Home and Harbourstone-Wentworth Court. Your care for our mother was delivered with grace and a loving touch. We would also like to thank Mom’s long-time physician, Mary-Anne Campbell, for her expert and compassionate care over many years.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at the Pier Community Funeral Home on Thursday, December 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. A celebration of her life will take place on Friday, December 28, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Internment, beside her beloved Jim, will take place at a later date.
Donations in memory of Eva may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
Online condolences may be sent to www.pierfuneralhome.com.
