Mary Geraldine ‘Boots’ MacKinnon

Date de décès : 12 janvier 2019

It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of Mary Geraldine ‘Boots’ MacKinnon. Geraldine passed away surrounded by her loving family at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital on January 12, 2019. Born in New Waterford on March 1, 1931 she was the daughter to the late Charles and Nellie (Ratchford) Boutilier of River Ryan.
Geraldine graduated in 1951, from the New Waterford General Hospital nursing program. She began her nursing career working as a Captain with the Canadian Air Force in Clinton Ontario and then returned to New Waterford where she worked as a registered nurse in the maternity department assisting in the delivery of many babies in the area.
Spending time with her family was the most important thing in her life. 'Granny' as she was lovingly known by all, was a selfless person and was most happy with a house full of grandchildren that she enjoyed sharing stories with. Throughout her life, her father was deeply involved in horse racing as well as her husband Peter, who passed the tradition on to their son Peter and grandson Warren. She took part in many conversations about horses and horse racing and was always supportive. She was inducted into the Cape Breton Horseman’s Association Honorary Hall of Fame in 2013.
She was an avid reader and after losing her vision she listened to many audiobooks on her audio reader both provided by the CNIB.
Geraldine was married to the late Peter MacKinnon and is survived by her loving children, Kim (Billy) Kavanaugh, Kelly (Michael) Timmons and Peter (Marilyn) MacKinnon, along with her beloved grandchildren, Jarrett, Shane, Cody, Nikki, Alyssa, Warren, Vincent and Daniel, and her great-grandchildren, Jack, Luke, Poppy and Wesley. Also surviving is her sister, Anna Abraham; brother, Raymond Boutilier, along with many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her husband, Peter; brother, Russell Boutilier, and sister, Leona Burke.
Special thanks to Dr. Azer and the amazing staff of the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital Emergency Department and Second Floor for their excellent and compassionate care.
Visitation is Tuesday, January 15, 2019 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford. The Funeral Mass, officiated by Fr.
