Anne Ottow

Anne Ottow

Date de décès : 5 janvier 2019

Ottow (Bowers), Anne JL - On 5, January 2019, Anne Ottow, just shy of her 83rd birthday (Jan. 9), left this earth for new adventures. Daughter of the late Loftus and Audrey Bowers, Broad Cove, Lunenburg County, Anne was born in 1936 in Castle Rising, Kings Lynn, England. In 1947, following WWII, Anne's family left the UK by ship and crossed the Atlantic Ocean for a new life in Canada. They arrived at a farm in Outram NS and farmed the land. Anne went to school at the one room school house in Outram, then continued to Middleton High School. At 15, Anne left home for Toronto where she met and married Jo Ottow. With the expansion of Volkswagen Canada, where Jo built his lifelong career, they moved to Kentville NS, where Joanna was born, then to Moncton, NB where Christine was born. In 1966, they bought a farm in Steeves Mountain, NB, close to Moncton, where Anne and Jo raised their family. During the mid-60's and into the 70's, when Anne didn't have her head in a book, she became a stalwart and passionate activist. Her love of writing (Pollution Probe column for the Moncton Times & Transcript), TV and radio broadcasting for CBC and ATV, public speaking and wanting to create meaningful change in the world, allowed her to become a strong local advocate for issues surrounding environmental conservation, politics, alternative energy, women's rights and multiculturalism. In addition to her activism, Anne was a dedicated mother to her two daughters, as well as a farmer and gardener. She lived close to the land. In the late 80's, Anne and Jo sold their farm in NB and retired to a log house they had built in Outram overlooking the Bay of Fundy. Anne continued her writing/volunteering and was involved with the Mirror Examiner, Shoreline News, Evergreen Theatre, Mount Hanley Schoolhouse, Annapolis Ventures and the Annapolis Community Health Board. Anne was predeceased by her husband Jo Ottow (2009) and is survived by her daughters Joanna Ottow of Outram and Christine Upton (Mark) and grandchildren Andrew and Kate Upton of Georgetown, ON. Anne is also survived by her siblings; Kaye Walker of Berwick, Michael Bowers (Hylda) of Windsor, Peter Bowers (Madelyn) of New Germany, Christopher Bowers (Judy) of Little Harbour and Janet Bowers (Julie) of Liverpool. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Since Anne always preferred practical solutions and to further education and learning, she registered to have her body donated to Dalhousie University's Human Body Donation Program (https://medicine.dal.ca/departments/department-sites/medical-neuroscience/about/donation-program.html). As such, a memorial service will be held at a later date. If you wish to honour Anne's memory and her life-long fight to protect our environment, please consider making a donation to an environmental organization of your choice.
