Adah Gruver, November 2, 1924 – December 28, 2018. It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Adah Gruver, formerly of Hantsport, Nova Scotia. Adah moved to Hantsport in 1985 to be closer to her daughter Nancy, son-in-law, Steve Van Wagoner, and their family. In 2006, the family pulled up roots and moved west to Kamloops, British Columbia, but she never stopped missing her Nova Scotia home and the friends she left behind. Adah loved everything about being part of Hantsport and the surrounding community—the old Home Hardware store, Friday night take-out from the Hantsport Pizzeria, soup and sandwich at the former Crimson and Clover, liver and onions at the former R&G restaurant, and the many discussions about quilting and life she had at the Avon Discount Fabric Centre. She loved apples in the fall, ice cream and cider from the farm markets, exercise classes at the Acadia gym, Ross Farm, and learning to ski at Martock. She supported the community through her many volunteer activities including work with the Kings County NDP, and was a shareholder of the Acadia Cinema Coop, and Just Us. All of these activities gave her purpose and were also a source of lasting close friendships. Adah, grew up in San Pedro, California. Following graduation from high school she became a Registered Nurse, and subsequently earned her BA in public health. She was a fiercely compassionate humanitarian which motivated her many contributions in nursing; as a school nurse at some of the most challenging schools in Los Angeles, VISTA volunteer (Volunteers in Service to America), and oncology nurse at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax. She became a proud Canadian citizen in 1986, and after growing up and working in the Los Angeles area, she felt more than privileged just to be able to watch the spectacle of the changing seasons from her home overlooking the Avon River, and to be close to three of her grandchildren, Justin, Kieran and Lee, and her great grandchild, Skylah. An extraordinarily active and engaged person, she was an avid reader, travelled the world, and drove herself to gym classes at the “Y” until two months before her death from complications of leukemia. Adah died at home in the arms of her daughters. She leaves her daughters, Nancy Gruver Van Wagoner (Steve) and Allison Kaplan (David), five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and her extended family of friends and relatives. She will be remembered for her energy, honesty, generosity, sharp mind, quick wit, and brilliant sense of humour. Adah believed that her legacy was in her family which truly included many good friends. The secret of life, she said, was to “live it,” and that she did—in spades. She will be missed. A celebration of her life will be on April 27, 2:00 PM, at the Hal Rogers Activity Centre, Kamloops.
