JAMES ARTHUR "JIM"  SWEET

New Glasgow - James Arthur “Jim” Sweet passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, May 20, 2019, of Cancer with family close at hand.
He was predeceased by his parents, Gerald and Elizabeth (Tansley) Sweet, and his sister, Barbara Whitefield and brother, Peter Sweet. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Inez Estella (King) Sweet; his sisters, Penny Silberhorn and Debbie Anderson; his daughters, Susan (Sweet) Burgoyne her husband Gregory; Cindy (Sweet) MacKinnon and her husband Neil; and Sandra Sweet and her husband Mark Derkitt; his grandchildren, Matthew Cooper (Jennifer), Lisa MacKinnon, Michael Cooper, and Josh MacKinnon; two step grandchildren, Melissa Burgoyne-Rigby (Kevin) and Jennifer Drysdale (Rob); two great grandchildren, Oliver and Charlotte Cooper; and three step great grandchildren, Josh Drysdale, and Tegan and Seamus Rigby. His family thanks, especially, Dr. Kwasnik and Ann McKim for their compassionate palliative care and support, as well as the nursing staff of the VON. For those of us who were fortunate enough to be with you through your journey with Cancer, we learned valuable lessons about living with courage while facing the end of life with dignity. Comforted and lifted up by your deep faith in God, you did not fear death. You are our rock, our inspiration, and our foundation—through you we have learned what is truly important about living. Jim will forever be remembered by those who knew and loved him as a man who had great love for his family and who committed countless volunteer hours to the communities in which he lived—especially in New Glasgow with Trinity United Church, the Gyro Club (Mr. Gyro), the United Way and the Masonic Fraternity of Freemasons, Albion Lodge No. 5 A.F. & A.M. His dedication strengthened individuals and helped build a stronger community and his legacy will forever live on through his family and his community. Visitation 7-9 pm Wednesday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow. Funeral service 2 pm Thursday in Trinity United Church, New Glasgow, with Rev. Donna Tourneur officiating. Reception to follow. Burial will be in Abercrombie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Palliative Care of New Glasgow or Trinity United Church. Albion Masonic Lodge will meet at the funeral home at 6:30 pm Wednesday to conduct their service. Condolences may be sent by visiting: www.rhporter.ca
