Ralph Seymour Blades

Blades, Ralph Seymour – 85, Chaswood, died July 11, 2011, in Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Building, Halifax. Born in Chaswood, he was the eldest son of the late Roy S. and Alice (McCurdy) Blades. Ralph served in the Armed Service at the end of the Second World War, after which he returned home and helped his parents raise his younger siblings. He worked with his father in lumbering, manufacturing, farming, and as a route peddler of meats and vegetables throughout Route 224 from Upper Musquodoboit through to Sheet Harbour and area. In his own company, he worked in construction and carpentry. He enjoyed family gatherings, bingo, playing cards, Sunday drives and travel. Surviving are sisters, Irene (Everette) Russell-Baker, Sheet Harbour; Ruth, Chaswood; Pat (Weldon) Rodenhiser, Norma (Ralph) Higgins, both of Dartmouth; Kathryn (Michael) Barbour, Halifax; brothers, Alvin (Doreen), Elderbank; Carl (Kathie), Port Lorne, Annapolis County; Walter, 150 Mile House, British Columbia; Wendell (Phyllis), Chezzetcook; Keith (Nancy), Dartmouth; Earl, Cooks Brook; David (Alberta), Kamloops, British Columbia; 39 nieces and nephews, 42 great-nieces and nephews, 15 great-great nieces and nephews; aunts, Blanche McCurdy, Montreal; Vera Carter, Middleboro, Cumberland County; brother-in-law, Bill Parker, Dartmouth.
He was predeceased by his twin sister, Ruby Parker; brother, Bernard and his wife, Lorna; brother-in-law, Bill Russell; sisters-in-law, Marlene and Joan Blades; a brother and nephew in infancy; nephew, Roger Russell; niece, Heather Blades. Cremation has taken place.
The family will receive friends downstairs in Middleton United Church, Middle Musquodoboit, on Thursday, 7-9 p.m., with the funeral service to be held in the church sanctuary on Friday, at 2 p.m., Rev. Annika Sangster officiating. A reception will follow the funeral service. A private family burial will be held in Gays River Cemetery at a later date. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Musquodoboit Valley Health Foundation Hospital or a charity of choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.
