ELSIE ELKIN

ELSIE ELKIN

1915 – 2011
Life Well Lived

Elsie Lillian Elkin (nee Kozen) was born December 13, 1915 in Winnipeg, MB. She spent her early years in Moose Jaw, SK and after marriage moved to Regina. She was predeceased by husband Hubert; mother and father Mary and John Kozen; and granddaughter Sunny Thompson (nee Crofford). Elsie is survived by her twin sons Lorne Elkin (Joy) of Moose Jaw, grandchildren Kim and Che (Fiona) Elkin, great-grandchildren twins Felix and Xavier; son Larry Elkin (Cappy) of Yellowknife, grandchildren Lynn (Ted), Brett and Derek (Geri) Elkin, great-grandchildren Bradley, Devon, Kira, Katherine, Davis, Paige and Benjamin; daughter Joanne Crofford (Victor), grandson Orion Paradis (Misty) great-grandson Lazlo, great-granddaughter Serena and great-great-grandson Noah. Celebrating her Ukranian heritage, Elsie excelled at violin and mandolin, leading a Ukrainian string orchestra at age 19 and teaching music from age 17-30. Growing up in the Dirty 30’s, Elsie had a life long compassion for the plight of the poor and other marginalized people, values she shared with her husband and nurtured in her children. Advocating for universal health care was an enduring passion, having lived through a time when access to health care was a privilege rather than a right. Political involvement began in the early 40’s with the CCF and later throughout life in the NDP. Elsie provided strong leadership to her family until her passing. She excelled as a homemaker, cook and hostess to family and friends. Music continued to play a part. As her children were growing up Elsie served on school committees and worked in two day cares. She and her husband Hubert shared interests in family, politics, painting, and community. At Elsie’s request, there will be no service. She will be interred with husband Hub at Regina Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Anyone wishing to contribute to a worthy cause in recognition of her many contributions to family and community might consider the New Democratic Party, 1122 Saskatchewan Drive, Regina, SK S4P OC4, or the Regina Community Clinic 1106 Winnipeg St., Regina, SK S4R 1J6. The family wishes to thank her Doctor and the medical staff at the Regina Community Clinic and the nurses and staff of Ward 3D, Pasqua Hospital for their compassion, and excellent care. Family and friends are invited to sign the online obituary and tributes page at www.regina-memorial.ca. Arrangements entrusted to Regina Funeral Home (306) 789-8850.
