The Winnipeg Blue Bombers lost a special fan on Saturday, August 27, 2011, as Evelyn Jean Krauchek (nee Blight) of Hodgeville, SK passed away peacefully, with family by her side, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Evelyn was born April 9, 1940, on a farm near Oakville, MB to Wilfred (1962) and Annie (1988) Blight. Her drive for adventure and independent nature found herself in Calgary, Alberta, working for Calgary Power where she would meet her future husband Vern Krauchek in 1964. The couple married in 1965 and a year later returned to their farming roots in Hodgeville, SK. Although Evelyn arrived in Hodgeville not knowing anyone, true to her spirit she ended up making life long friends. Evelyn adored country living and thought it was the perfect community to raise her four children. Many hours were spent in the kitchen learning how to cook Ukrainian dishes with Uncle Mike and Vern’s aunts. Family get to-gethers often included Ev’s delicious perogies. Like many farm wives, Ev was the driving force of the household and an active mother in her children’s interests. With three boys in hockey and a daughter in volleyball, this was no easy feat. As her children grew and moved away from the farm, Ev was able to pursue other interests among which include: quilting, crafting, bird watching, painting, BINGO, and travelling, especially back to the old country. She visited many countries but most recently and memorable was the trip spent with her daughter Vivian exploring Egypt. Evelyn was a loyal member of the Royal Purple and was one of the founding members of the Hodgeville Museum and Craft Shoppe. Ev volunteered many hours for several community causes. She will be sadly missed by her husband Vern, sons Michael (Karen) of Calgary and their children Amanda and Jordan; Trevor (Loredana) of Regina and their children Bishop and Jett; Terry (Sandy) of Hodgeville and their children Blade, McAyla, Emma and Chayne; daughter Vivian (Tony) of Calgary, sister Irene Blight and brother Jim (Jacquie) Blight both of Oakville, MB as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The grandchildren will especially miss grandma’s gingerbread cookies, ice cream treats and terrific pies but mostly her hugs and kisses. Grandma Ev always jokingly said that she may not have the most grandkids but she had the best! The family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to the staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Gravelbourg, SK as well as the staff at the Allan Blair Cancer Clinic. Donations can be made to either St.Joseph’s Hospital Palliative Care Unit, 216 Bettez St., Gravelbourg, SK S0H1X0 or the Kelstern Community Church, Box 114, Hodgeville, SK S0H 2B0.Funeral Service was held Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Hodgeville Community Hall. Interment was held at St. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Hodgeville. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Piche-Hawkins-Grondin Funeral Chapels, Assiniboia & Gravelbourg.
