Catherine Bennie

Catherine Bennie

Cathy passed away in Vancouver on September 7, 2011, following a diagnosis of leukemia three months ago. She was 47.
Cathy will be dearly missed by her mother, Jean; husband, Alex Sayn-Wittgenstein; children, Eva and Leo; sisters, Susan (David) Bennie and Allison (Mike) Crowell; in-laws Leo and Maria, George (Audra), Katherine (Keith), and Peter (Josie); and many nieces and nephews. Her father, Stewart, passed away last year.
Born in Montreal, she moved to Charlottetown at age 6. There, she excelled at school (when she wanted to), lifeguarding, sailing and swimming. She left home to earn a science degree followed by a year in Europe. Cathy then headed west, at the time one of the few women to earn a degree in electrical engineering at UBC. Cathy applied her knowledge to jobs that included work as a design engineer and as an instructor in BCIT’s electrical program. The true joy in Cathy’s life were her children. Her kind and vibrant nature carry on in them. Cathy’s warm smile will also be missed by her wonderful circle of friends who provided incredible support throughout the past three months.
A memorial service will take place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 11, at the Unitarian Church of Vancouver, 949 West 49th Avenue, Vancouver.
If you wish, donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (www.lls.org) would be most appreciated.
Walkey & Company Funeral Directors, 604-738-0006.
