Sgt. Daniel J. Planetta (retired), age 69, of West Lake Ainslie, passed away peacefully on Feb. 25, 2012, surrounded by his loving family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, N.S.
Dan was born July 8, 1942, in Sydney to the late Catherine nee (MacNeil) and Joseph Planetta.
Dan joined the Halifax Police Department on June 3, 1963. He loved his work very much and served 31 years of devotion and dedication to the City of Halifax.
Dan was first and foremost a family man. His most important roles in life were husband, dad and papa.
Dan is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 51 years, Alice (nee MacNeil); sons, Daniel J. Jr. (Anne), Robert P. (Kimberly); daughters, Margaret (Stewart Dixon), Kathy (Robert Hallett), Katie (Dean Howlett); grandchildren, Rosie, Melodey, Ameleah, Tyler Man, Steven Planetta, R.D. and Bradley Hallett, Sammy Howlett. He is also survived by his brother, John Planetta (Cindy); sister, Agnes (Allan Mulvihill); and a very large extended loving family.
Besides his parents, Dan was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Ann.
Many of Dan’s nieces, nephews, brother and sister-in-laws viewed him as much more than an uncle or in-law. He was also a surrogate papa, friend and mentor. Dan always knew just what to say no matter the circumstance. Pooh will be forever lovingly remembered and missed by everyone.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 29 at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 1 at the funeral home chapel with Pastor Sheldon Chant officiating. There will be a reception following the service.
