SAPIEHA, Helen (nee Podbielski)

It is with great sadness that the family of Helen Sapieha announces her sudden passing on Friday, March 30, 2012.
Helen will be tremendously missed by her son, Ernie (Deb), her daughter, Beverly (Don) and her seven grandchildren, Kristin, Jeffrey and Kaylee Sapieha and Tyler (Ayla), Riley, Jason and Tommy Adair. Also left to mourn are her brother, Leon Podbielski (Vernice) and her sister, Mary Berezowski, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Helen was predeceased by Paul, her loving husband of fifty two years.
Helen was born and raised on a farm in Strong Pine, Saskatchewan. After a whirlwind romance, Helen and Paul were married in Prince Albert where they happily resided raising their two children. In order to be closer to family after Paul’s passing in 2002, Helen moved to Calgary where she enjoyed her new home at the Manor Village of Garrison Woods. Family was paramount to Helen. She cherished her role as wife and mother, but her greatest love was being a grandmother. Her grandchildren meant the world to her and she was so very proud of all of them. Her eyes would light up at a phone call or visit from her grandchildren. Helen was a very religious, soft-hearted, generous and caring person. She was outgoing and friendly to everyone she met. Helen closely guarded her age, as she felt age didn’t matter. She truly believed it was most important to stay “young at heart”. One of her favourite sayings was “stay young and beautiful”.
Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. with a visitation held prior to the service. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Interment will take place in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan at a later date. In lieu of flowers and if friends so desire, memorial donations can be made to a charity of their choice. The family would like to thank the staff of the Stroke and Palliative Care Units at the Foothills Medical Centre for their care and compassion during a very difficult time.
