Psychiatrist, 71. Passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at St. Clare’s Hospital. Leaving to mourn his loving wife Diane, sons Sean (Linda), Chris (special friend Debbie Diddle) and daughter Kathy (Dale Hillier), grandsons David and Andrew Hogan, step-grandchildren Ryan and Shannon Schlivert (Sarkis Safarian, children Caleb, Sascha, and Gabriel), and a close circle of friends. Predeceased by parents Michael and Theresa (Cleary) Hogan. Born in Grand Falls, NL on June 1, 1940, Ben was educated at St. Mary’s University and Dalhousie Medical School in Halifax. Returning to Newfoundland in 1965, he served two years as Assistant Medical Officer at the Placentia Cottage Hospital before beginning his residency in psychiatry at the Waterford Hospital in St John’s. Upon completion of his Fellowship in psychiatry, he began his private practice in association with the Grace General Hospital in January, 1974 and remained in practice until April 13, 2012. He was dedicated to the well-being of both his patients and his profession. For many years, Ben served on the executive of the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association and was President in 1989-90. He served 16 years on the General Council of the Canadian Medical Association and was a member of the Department of Justice Criminal Code Mental Disorder Review Board for more than 20 years. Since 1998, he has been a member of the Board of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and has been associated with Memorial University Medical School as a Clinical Associate Professor, Psychiatry since the 1980s. Ben was a man of many interests. He was a member of the Waterford Valley Rotary Club. He very much loved trains, cars and boats. He enjoyed cruises as much for the ships as for the places they visited and found in Europe a wondrous variety of trains as well as places to visit. He was a founding member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Transport Historical Society, the Terra Nova Model Railroaders, and Vinland Motorsport (including Targa Newfoundland). Visitation will take place at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Ave. on Saturday, April 21, 2012 from 7-9 p.m., and Sunday, April 22, 2012 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Gower Street United Church at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 23, 2012. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. No flowers, by request. Donations can be made to the Waterford Valley Rotary, the SPCA, or the charity of your choice.
