New Glasgow – Anne McKean, of New Glasgow, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 28, 2012 in the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit surrounded by her loving family. Born in New Glasgow, Anne was a daughter of the late Justin and Dolein “Dolly” (Smith) McGrath. In July 1957, she married the love of her life Robert (Bob) McKean. They were totally devoted to each other and their family raising two wonderful daughters: Catherine (Boyd Greene) and Susan Higgs. Anne graduated from the former Provincial Normal College and began her teaching career in 1952 in a two-room school in Merigomish. From there she taught in Stellarton, Westville and New Glasgow, retiring in 1990. She was a member of Northumberland Quilters, Sharon St. John Quilters and was a volunteer at the Aberdeen Hospital Gift Shop. She enjoyed quilting, reading, walking and travelling. She was a member of Trinity United Church, New Glasgow where she previously served as leader of Unit A, President of Trinity UCW and Superintendent of CGIT. Besides her husband, daughters and son-in-law, Anne is also survived by her grandchildren: Alexander, Caroline and Allison Higgs; Marianne and Hannah Greene; nieces: Janet (Graham Schurman) and Christy Strike; great nieces and nephews John, Andrew, Catherine, Heather and Marion Schurman, Chateauguay, Quebec. Anne was predeceased by her sister, Martha McGrath. Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 pm Tuesday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service 2 pm Wednesday in Trinity United Church, New Glasgow with Rev. Dr. Jim Shaffner officiating. Burial will be in Auburn Cemetery.
