AKISTER, Marjorie Isobel
08 June 1920 – 23 May 2012
Marjorie Isobel Akister passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Tuesday 23 May 2012 at Royal University Hospital just two weeks short of her 92nd birthday. She is survived by her three children Marilyn (Arden Gunderson), Marvin (Leni), and Kevin (Nola), seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband of 56 years Earl Akister, her parents Alonzo and Isabella Smith, three brothers Cecil, Harry, and John (Marshall), and two sisters Alma and Flossie. She was born in Moose Jaw, the youngest of six children. She was brought up in the Sanctuary area where she met Earl. They were married on 17 December 1942. Settling in Sanctuary they began raising their family. In 1952 Marjorie and Earl acquired the store, dance hall, and boathouse at Clearwater Lake Regional Park which they operated together for over 15 years. Eventually they would move to Kyle in 1958. Marjorie was a spiritual person, singing in the choir and playing the organ as a member of the Kyle United Church for many years. She also gave piano lessons, taught yoga, and was an avid curler, golfer, and bridge player. Trophies and metals could be found all about the home. She reveled in the challenge of cross word puzzles, completing the Star Phoenix puzzle each day until her passing. Marjorie moved to Saskatoon shortly after Earl’s death. There she lived independently cultivating new friendships. For the last six months she was lovingly supported and cared for by the staff at Keedwell Assisted Living. Her tenacious spirit will be remembered by all who knew her. A Memorial Service was held at 2:00pm Saturday 26 May 2012 in Saskatoon at Acadia-McKague’s Funeral Centre in Saskatoon. Internment at Swift Current Cemetery will follow at a later date.
