HICKS, Clarence Richard, Port Clyde. The family is saddened to announce the passing of Clarence Richard Hicks on Friday, June 8, 2012 at Roseway Hospital. Born in Port Clyde August 23, 1932 he was a son of the late Herman and Ruby (Murphy) Hicks. In his teenage years Clarence learned the farrier trade and shod many horses in and around Shelburne County. He later moved to Halifax, where he worked for Burns Fisheries, CN, cartage and piggy back division, and Irving Oil. It was at this time Clarence met and married his wife, Laura. They moved back to the South Shore in 1962, first living in Shelburne and later, Port Clyde. Clarence retired from Irving Oil after 41 years of service. Clarence was founder of the Port Clyde Fire Department and spent many hours repairing equipment. He served as Chief several terms and was caller of the Bingo fundraiser for many years. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed horseshoes and his books. He also had a terrific sense of humour. He took several courses at Shelburne Vocational School, including welding, mechanics and carpentry, all of which he enjoyed and he put this knowledge to good use. Clarence is survived by his wife of 51 years, Laura (Crowell) Hicks; sons, Ian (Carmella), Port Clyde, Paul (Jan), Jordan Bay; grandchildren, Kate-Lynn, Bridgewater, Karley, Fort McMurray, Matthew and Colin, Jordan Bay; great grandson, Jonah, Bridgewater; sisters, Helen Hankinson, Barrington Passage, Nancy (Don) Whiteside, London Ont., Barbara (Rick Andrews), Nepean, Ont., brothers, Jim (Bev), Dartmouth, Ernie (Madge), Halifax, Allan (Chick), Springhill; sister-in-law, Gerry Hicks, Halifax, Jean Hicks, New Waterford. Besides his parents Clarence was predeceased by brothers, Stan, Cecil, Burnley, Charles, Arnold and brother-in-law, Doug Hankinson. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held Tuesday, June 12 from H. Huskilsons Memorial Chapel, Barrington, with Pastor Cindy Dunnett officiating. Donations in memory may be made to the Rosalin Nickerson Care Fund, Port Clyde Cemetery or Port Clyde Volunteer Fire Dept.
