With great sorrow and broken hearts the family wish to announce the passing of their husband, father, grandfather and brother, Peter MacKinnon on June 17, 2012.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Archie and Belle (MacKenzie) MacKinnon.
Peter was a Korean War veteran and fought in the Battle of Kap’yong.
Peter was a life time member of the New Waterford Legion, Branch No. 15, an honorary member of the KOC, St. Anthony Daniel Council #3209, member of the Nova Scotia Canadian Standardbred Association. He worked as a miner for 17 years and then he went to work for Modern Ciy Dairy for 25 years until retirement.
Peter was an avid horseman and was proud to be a member of the Cape Breton Horsemen’s Hall of Fame, was well known at racetracks and in earlier years he raced horses with his best friend, the late John MacCormick and when his son Peter Jr. joined him in the racing circle and then most recently his grandson Warren came on board, they were called “Team MacKinnon”. Peter had a great sense of humour and a large presence. He could be heard before seen. He would be remembered for owning racehorses such as Bonnie Mite, Orwan, Big Cruiser, Deep Sea Dan and most recently, Fex Education, to name a few.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Geraldine ‘Boots’ (Boutilier); daughters, Kimberley (Bill) Kavanaugh, River Ryan, Kelly (Michael ‘Moe’) Timmons, Lower Sackville; and son, Peter (Marilyn), Sydney; sisters, Theresa LeLevier and Joan (Bernie) MacKinnon, both of Bedford, N.S. Peter is also survived by his eight grandchildren, Nicole, Alyssa, Warren, Vincent, Daniel, Jarrett, Shane and Cody, who everyone knew they were his pride and joy and meant the world to him. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Peter was also predeceased by sister, Anna Cormier, brothers, Angus ‘Bicky’ and William and stepmom, Nellie (Archie) MacKinnon.
Visitation will take place Wednesday, June 20 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and a celebration of Peter’s life will be held Thursday, June 21 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of Saint Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating, with interment in St. Michael’s Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the KOC and all are invited.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500. All KOC members are asked to meet at the funeral home Wednesday for prayers at 7:30 p.m.
