Hancock, Mary Elizabeth - 87 of New Minas, recently residing in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville, passed away on June 30, 2012 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville surrounded by family. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, she was a daughter of the late Cecil Robie and Lillian (nee Hiltz) Thomson. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Douglas Lawrence Hancock; infant siblings, Rhoda and Murray; sisters, Greta and Margaret “Peggy”; brothers, Avery, Curtis and Walter. She is survived by sons, Richard (Dianne), Little River Lake and P. Michael (Sheila), Greenwich; grandchildren, Steven (Darlene), New Minas; Andrea, Halifax and Erin (Jackson Mann), Toronto; a brother, William “Bill” (Vera); a sister, Carol Prospero (Frank); many nieces and nephews. Mary was employed with MT&T for 38 years as an operator, supervisor and payroll clerk. The telephone was her lifeline. She was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and IBEW. Mary was always up for a challenge, be it crocheting, crossword puzzles, cryptoquotes or a lively conversation. She enjoyed the company of her family and friends, including annual trips to Ontario to visit her sister, Carol and family. She will be remembered as a generous, kind and feisty lady, who kept her sense of humour to the very end. She was a member of St. John's Anglican Church, Church Street where the service was held on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at 2:00 p.m., Archdeacon David Garrett officiating. A reception followed in the Parish Hall. A private family interment was held at Fox Hill Cemetery, Church Street following the reception. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville and there was no visitation by request. She will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Family flowers only please. Donations in her honour may be made to The Lung Association or a charity of one's choice.
