Violet (Vi) Pike

November 5, 1914-June 28, 2012. Passed away at Tobin’s Guest Home in Holyrood. She was born in Carbonear and later moved to Grand Falls-Windsor for all of her adult life and in 2000 to Holyrood. She was predeceased by her parents John and Caroline Fraize of Carbonear, husband John Pike 2001; brother Hayward (Alma) and sisters: Elizabeth (Eldred) Hedges, Florence (Llewellyn) Batten, Lillian (Llewellyn) Lawrence, Carrie (Roy) Moores, all of Carbonear. She is survived by son Vincent and daughter-in-law Florence Pike of St. John’s and a special granddaughter Pamela Pike (Stephen Binz) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; as well as a large number of nieces and nephews. Vi and John were avid curlers and golfers. Vi represented Newfoundland and Labrador at the Ladies Diamond D National Championships (the forerunner to the Scott Tournament of Hearts), the Senior Ladies National Championships and along with her husband John, in the Mixed Doubles National Championships for a total of 19 times. Also she represented the Newfoundland and Labrador Ladies Amateur Golf Team and Senior Golf Team at the National Championships on 10 occasions. Vi is a member of the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame. Also she is a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame, the Newfoundland and Labrador Curling Hall of Fame, the Newfoundland and Labrador Golf Hall of Fame; as well as a Life member of the Grand Falls Golf Club. She was active in the School Girls Curling Program. Vi and John were the first and only (to date) husband and wife members of the Newfoundland Sports Hall of Fame. Vi was one of 20 featured women to be recognized by the Department of Education in a Poster Series of Influential Women of Newfoundland and Labrador for the Junior High School program. The family wishes to offer a special thank you to Walter and Betty Tobin and the staff of Tobin’s Guest Home and to Dr. David Mercer of Holyrood. Cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday, August 3, 2012. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held from Barrett’s Chapel on Friday, August 3, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
