MCALARY, HARRY L. – It is with great sadness the family announce the sudden passing of MWO Harry L. “Pidie” McAlary of Nanaimo, BC. Born 1931, in Saint John, he was the son of the late Harry and Hilda (Campbell) McAlary. Pidie attended Vocational School, taught at the YMCA and he joined the Armed Forces at the age of 17 and fought in the Korean War. He was shot and patched back together at the Mash Unit 4077. He met and married Leona McAleer. After serving his 35 years, he went on to the Reserves with 722 Communication Squadron where he was the SSM –Squadron Sergeant Major. Pidie and Leona moved to Public Landing and he worked at the DVA and the Saint John Regional Hospital in the Purchasing and Biomedical Depts. Weekends and holidays were spent with family and friends at Sam Brook with card parties, bonfires, fishing, hunting, hiking and so much more. Pidie left a lasting impression with everyone he met. He loved to write poems and many times they were shown in the newspaper and even published in a book. He is survived by his three daughters Debbie Peters (Ed) of BC, Dianna Pegg (Francis) of Norton and Wendy Maber (Stephen) of Saint John; 11 grandchildren Tanya, Sky, Paul, Nikolas, Lynn, Amanda, Frank, Beth, Stephanie, Brian and Jennifer; eight great-grandchildren McKenzie, Morgan, Eden, Paige, Tyler, Riley, Madyson, and Destiny. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife Leona (McAleer) McAlary.
A Memorial Service for Pidie and Leona will be held from Fundy Funeral Home Chapel, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (646-2424) on Saturday, October 13th, 2012 at 2 P.M. The family will receive visitors from 12 p.m. until the time of service. A tribute to a Veteran service will begin at 2 p.m. Donations in Pidie’s memory may be made to The Canadian Diabetes Association or to Heart and Stroke Foundation.
