It is with sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Neil Joseph ‘Deets’ Kennedy, 78, of New Waterford on Friday, July 20 at New Waterford Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of Sadie (MacNeil) Kennedy and the late Neil A. Kennedy.
Deets was a member of the former Mount Carmel Church, currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard. He was a 3rd Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, Council 3209, New Waterford. Deets graduated from Dalhousie University with a B.A. and B.Ed. He then went on to teach for the next 20 years at Breton Education Centre until his retirement in 1995. He was an avid bridge player and loved listening to fiddle music.
Surviving are his wife, Priscilla (Conway); sisters, Sr. Dolores Kennedy, Sydney, Helen MacNeil, Moncton; brothers, John (Sondra), Paul (Pam), Stephen (Elizabeth), all of Sydney, Alex (Dolores), Gardiner Mines, Archie (Bev), Bridgewater, Joseph (Rhonda) Lafond, Alberta; numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his father, Deets was predeceased by a sister in youth, Christina.
Visitation will be held Sunday, July 22 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Monday, July 23 at 2 p.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Ave., with Fr. Victor Ozoufuanya officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at St. Leonard’s Parish Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the VON, Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or a charity of one’s choice.
The K.O.C. will assemble for a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday in the funeral home.
