Allister MacDonald of Marion Bridge, passed away Monday, Aug. 6, 2012.
Born in Hillside, Mira on March 1, 1917, Allister was the son of the late Duncan and Willetta (MacDonald) MacDonald of Hillside, Mira.
Allister operated a local street railway tramcar for the Cape Breton Electric Company and often spoke of making the last trip between Sydney and Glace Bay. For many years, Allister worked at Kings Road Motors, Sydney River. Allister was a school janitor in Marion Bridge and drove a school bus until his retirement. He loved to tell stories of those he “put to school”. He was also a member and treasurer of the Marion Bridge Volunteer Fire Department and continued to be an honorary member. Allister took pride in overseeing Oakfield Cemetery, Hillside until recent years. He was proud of his heritage and was a past chief of Clan Donald and Angus of Cape Breton. An Elder at Bethel United Church, Marion Bridge, Allister also sang in the church choir. His singing with The Golden K was a joy for him, especially on the occasions that the singing took him to senior residence homes. Allister was a member of Mira Seniors and Pensioners Club, Marion Bridge.
Allister is survived by his wife, Audrey (Hussey) MacDonald, Marion Bridge; sons, Wayne (Hilda) MacDonald and Gordon (Diane) MacDonald and daughter, Sara Jean (Donnie) Petrie. Allister is also survived by seven grandchildren, Nancy (Troy) Skinner, James (Kim) MacDonald, Malcolm (Jennifer) MacDonald, Graham (Amanda) MacDonald, Andrew (Connie) MacDonald, Daniel Petrie and Brian Petrie; eight great-grandchildren; and sister, Dorothy Campbell.
He was predeceased by three sisters, Lena Jaques, Mildred Fraser and Laura MacDonald and brothers-in-law, Roy Campbell, Calvin MacDonald and Phil Jaques.
Visitation for the late Allister MacDonald will take place at Bethel United Church on Wednesday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate Allister’s life will be held at Bethel United Church on Thursday 2 p.m., with Nancy Whitney-Latham, DLM and Rev. Robert Hussey officiating. Interment in Oakfield Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
