It is with heartbreaking sadness that we announce the passing of our dear wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and teacher to all, Sandra Jean Gibbons (nee Vickers), after a lengthy battle with several illnesses.
Mom was a member of Carman United Church, Sydney Mines.
Mom was a very thoughtful, caring person who was always there when anyone needed her. She was very generous with her time whether it be taking her daughters all over for dancing, travelling with the entire family for horseshows or chauffeuring her nieces and nephews and all the kids on Brooklyn Avenue to here, there and everywhere.
She graduated in 1962 from Normal College and was a very dedicated elementary teacher in Sydney Mines for over 30 years.
Mom really enjoyed camping with her family in Boisdale, tending to her gardens, watching horseshows, spending time on the pool deck watching the kids, and bowling. Mom had a real talent for writing poems and she loved sharing her poetry with family and friends.
Mom was an amazing wife for 48 years to her soulmate, Johnny ‘Gibby’ Gibbons. Together they raised six children who she was extremely proud of, Gail (Johnny Murphy), Port Hawkesbury, N.S., Deanna Lennark (Andrew), Dartmouth, N.S., John (Sharon), Sydney Mines, N.S., Suzanne Tobin (Scott), Greenwood, N.S., Cheryl, Nunavut (summers at home), Bonnie (Andrew Lewis), Balls Creek, N.S. She had seven grandchildren who were the pride and joy of her life, Jennifer, Shawn, Jocelyn, Jacob, Katie, Maggie and Jill. She is also survived by brothers, Tom (Irene), Earl (Willena), Lawrence (Joyce), Donald; one sister, Frances; many nieces and nephews; and her best friend of many years, Jean Young.
She was predeceased by her parents, Kenneth and Agnes Vickers as well as her sisters, Helen ‘Bunny’ and Gail.
Visitation will be held in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, Thursday, Aug. 9 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place Friday, Aug. 10 at 11 a.m. at Carman United Church, Clyde Avenue, Sydney Mines, with Rev. David Luker officiating.
Donations can be made in Sandra’s name to the Canadian Diabetes Association and/or the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Words of comfort may be sent to the family at jmjobesfuneralhome@ns.aliantzinc.ca.
