It is with deep sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Barbara Ann Carrigan, 64, of Lingan, on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012, at the Halifax Infirmary.
Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Michael ‘Buck’ and Mary (White) Kelly.
Barbara was a member of the former St. Joseph Church, Lingan, currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard.
She graduated from St. FX and went on to teach math at St. Michael’s and Glace Bay high schools for 35 years.
Barbara was an avid sports fan who could always be seen at various sporting events such as hockey, baseball and more recently, rugby. During her teaching career, she wouldn’t miss a Glace Bay Panthers high school hockey game. She was also involved with coaching the high school girls hockey team, bowling teams and Reach for the Top.
Barbara was a lifelong Montreal Canadiens fan who dedicated a room in her home to the team. She was at most peace in her own yard and was known to decorate her home for every occasion. Barbara kept active and loved skating, bowling and rollerblading. She also loved swimming and for the last seven years, five days per week, she would get together to swim with her sister-in-law, Bev, and other friends. Barbara touched the lives of those who knew her. She will be missed by all.
Surviving are daughter, Anne Carrigan, Lingan; son, Michael (Leanna) Carrigan, Sydney, and their daughter, Elizabeth, Barbara’s first and only grandchild whom she adored; sister, Mary ‘Bunny’ Kelly, Dartmouth; numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Besides her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her husband, William ‘Billy’ Carrigan and a sister, Linda O’Connell and one sister in infancy.
Visitation will be held Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Saturday, Aug. 18 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Lingan, with a luncheon to follow in Lingan Hall.
