Lawerence ‘Lunch’ Bernard, 70, We’koqma’q First Nation, passed away on Friday, Aug. 24, 2012 at home.
Born in Whycocomagh, Inverness Co., he was a son of the late Charles Andrew and Annie Mae (Sylliboy) Bernard. He was last employed with Waycobah Fisheries. He had a great knowledge of traditional herbs and medicines. He was a native activist and was one of the founding members of the Mi’kmaq Warriors Society. He was known at Lt. Bernard. He was proud of the fact that his grandfather was Grand Chief, Gabriel Sylliboy.
Surviving are his wife, Lena (Toney); daughters, Laura (Wilfred) Prosper, Karen Bernard (Alan Paul), both of Eskasoni; Linda Charlene (Barry) Crowe, We’koqma’q; sons, Lloyd (Ramona) Gould, Eskasoni; Cyrus (Charlene), We’koqma’q; Leonard (Tina), Edmonton, Alta.; sisters, Julena Bernard, We’koqma’q, Ducy (Bob) Paul-Merrill, Ludlow, Maine; brothers, Walter, Alan (Juliana), John Wayne and Peter ‘Seven’, all of We’koqma’q; 21 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by brothers, Frederick and Charles ‘Chuckie’; grandchildren, Wilfred and Charlie Prosper.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) in the Fisheries Building, 160 Reservation Rd., We’koqma’q First Nation. Solite will follow on Thursday after 11 a.m. A private family service will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Victoria County Palliative Care Society.
