Wilma Miller

MILLER, WILMA - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Wilma Miller of Nictau at the Hotel Dieu of St. Joseph Hospital on October 2, 2012. Wilma was born in Plaster Rock, NB on October 1, 1924. She was the daughter of the late John and Verna (Jacques) Clarke. She is survived by her sons William Miller III of Nictau, NB, Jim Miller (Bonnie James) of Holyrood, NL, and daughter Julie (Martin McCrum) of Aiken, SC; grandsons Dr. Gregory McCrum (Suzanne) and Jeffery McCrum (Rachel Carey); three great-grandchildren Gavin, Rory and Clara McCrum. She is also survived by brothers Lionel Clarke (Marg) of Waverley, NS and James Graydon Clarke of Delta, BC; brother-in-law Bob Miller of Riley Brook, sisters-in-law Bertha Clarke of Saint John and Mary duManoir of Perth-Andover; plus many nieces, nephews and friends and her caregiver Karenna Hatheway. She was predeceased by her husband William Miller in 1998, and her brothers, Bob and John Clarke, and sister Ruth Watson. Wilma was born into an outdoors family. She spent summers as a child at her parents farm. Hunting was a passion and at 18 she became the first female game warden in N.B. She hunted bear and deer and her love of the outdoors never left her. She was a Girl Scout leader in Presque Isle, Maine, where she lived for several years. In 1972 when she returned to NB she was deeply involved in the NB Naturalist Federation of which she was made a Lifetime Honorary Member. She turned her hunting skills to bird watching and to this end, thoroughly enjoyed the bird count at her window and sharing that love with the countless friends who called her.
Resting at the Tobique Chapel in Plaster Rock with visitation on Saturday 11 am to 1 pm. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at 2 pm from St. Andrew's United Church. Rev. Steve Longmoore officiating. Interment will follow in the Riley Brook Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Hotel Dieu St. Joseph Hospital Foundation (Palliative Care Unit) or to the Tobique Valley High School Scholarship Fund for students going into Medicine or Biology would be appreciated by the family.
