Verna Eileen Douglas passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at the age of 86. Verna was born February 22, 1926 in South Mountain, Ontario. Her parents, Daniel and Lydia Declare had five girls and three boys. Verna attended elementary and high school in South Mountain. She moved to Moose Jaw at the age of 19 planning to stay for just a year but met and married Hughie Douglas. Together they had four sons: David, Ralph, Kevin, and Kenneth; two daughters Holly and Louise; and a foster daughter, Jackie Wells. When Hughie passed away in 1965, Verna moved to Regina to attend the University and obtain her teaching certificate. Upon receiving her certificate she became a substitute teacher. In 1979, she moved to Midale, SK where she was the Post Master for 17 years and later became the Mayor for three years. She moved back to Moose Jaw around 1995 living at Crestview Manor until moving to Pioneer Lodge in 2012. Verna belonged to the Royal Canadian Legion Auxiliary for 40 years. A special memory was a trip to Whitehorse, Yukon where she panned for gold in Alaska with her son David and his family. Verna is predeceased by her parents; her husband Hughie; sons David Douglas and Kenneth Douglas; and daughter Holly Brooks; her siblings William, Bessie, Caroline, James, Stewart, Nora and Hazel. She will be sadly missed by her children, Ralph (Carol), Kevin, Louise (Peter), foster daughter Jackie; daughter-in-law Carole; grandchildren Scottie, Sandra, Linda, Douglas, Michelle, Mandy, Bill, Lydia, William, Stacey, Kenneth, Cher and Cindy; and great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday October 11, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel. Della Ferguson will officiate. Interment will take place at Rosedale Cemetery at a later date.
