DOERKSEN, Helen (Martens) Kehler was born May 17, 1913 to Cornelius and Elizabeth Martens at Hanover Municipality in Manitoba. She was one of seven children; she had three brothers and three sisters. The family left Manitoba for Saskatchewan and settled in the Morse area. Helen and Henry Kehler fell in love, and they married on November 17, 1935. She often talked about how much fun they had together as a couple. Helen and Henry farmed in the Glen Kerr area where they began their family of four children; Leona,Les, Alvin and Elsie. In 1948, the family moved to Main Centre where they purchased a grocery store, and later they operated the Kehler Garage. Henry also ran a Ford and Massey Ferguson dealership that allowed the family to travel a fair amount, which included trips to Ontario and BC. Helen and Henry even made a trip to Mexico in a new Edsel. On August 24, 1961 a tragic car accident took the life of Henry, which left Helen heartbroken and having to look after the children on her own. Helen was an extremely hard-working, independent, determined woman. In the early 1960s, she moved to Herbert and got a job Housekeeping at the Herbert Hospital. She did housecleaning for people in the area, and also babysat for a few families. Helen often took in boarders, which helped for extra income; she always made sure the boarders felt like they were family. Helen had a wonderful attitude and loved to have fun. She loved curling, sewing, gardening, and playing games, especially Yahtzee. She was also quite the carpenter and loved building and renovating. In the late 70s, she moved into the Sunrise low rentals, and in 1979, she surprised the family by telling them she was getting married' The family had no idea she was even dating a long time family friend, Mr. Abe Doerksen. She not only gained companionship, but also gained another family that she grew very fond of. Unfortunately, Abe and Helen's time together was short. Abe passed away in 1983. Helen became a member of the New Horizon's and enjoyed spending time there playing games and visiting. Throughout all her years, her determination, independence, and sense of humour attributed to her fine character. At the age of 93, she moved into the Herbert Heritage Manor. She adapted well as she did with all of her moves. She loved to tease and have fun with the caregivers. She moved into the Herbert Nursing Home in 2008 where she resided until her passing on October 2 at the age of 99. Although she lost her independence, her sense of humour never left her, and she will always be remembered for that. She was quite a character, and truly was one special lady. Helen was greeted in Heaven by her parents, and all of her siblings: Elizabeth, Jake, Cornelius, Bill, Katie, and Eva. Her husband Henry Kehler and their son Les Kehler. Her grandchildren Danica and Corey Cornelson, Michael Zacharias, Andrew Kehler, and her husband Abe Doerksen. Helen is survived by her children: Leona (Harry) Cornelson, Alvin (Lorie) Kehler, and Elsie (Otto) Zacharias. Her grandchildren: Darcy (Beth) Cornelson, Darla (LeRoy) Martens, Wendell (Roxanne) Kehler, Kenilee and Adam Kehler, Michelle (Kim) Evans, and Mark (Danita) Zacharias. Her great grandchildren: Amy and Amanda Cornelson, Jayda and Jori Martens, Justin and Samantha Kehler, Carissa Zacharias, Jordan and Brieann Evans, and Caitlyn and Cassidy Zacharias. And one great great grandchild: Jovi Zacharias. She is also survived by one in law, John Funk, many nieces and nephews, and last but not least, the Abe Doerksen family. The family would like to thank the caregivers of the Herbert Integrated Health Facility for their ever constant love and kindness towards our mother. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at the Living Faith Fellowship in Herbert with Pastor Ken Epp officiating. Active pallbearers were her grandchildren: Darcy Cornelson, Wendell Kehler, Darla Martens, Adam Kehler, Kenilee Kehler, Michelle Evans, Mark Zacharias, and Raegan Funk.
