It is with sorrow we announce the death of Douglas Read Furlong (1915 - 2012) at the Centennial Villa on October 12, 2012. Douglas was born in Linden, the son of the late Bedford and Lois Jane (Mills) Furlong.
On the death of his father he and his mother managed the farm for several years. He spent his winters working in the lumber woods and summers on the farm until his marriage. He married Vera Thompson on September 6th, 1941 and worked with W.B. Wells in the Blueberry business for several years. In 1946 they bought a farm in Shinimicas and he soon decided to go into the Carpentry business. He built and remodeled many homes and cottages in the Amherst, Oxford and Amherst Shore area. After retiring he spent time remodeling their own home in Shinimicas.
Doug was a past Chancellor of Chignecto Lodge, Knights of Pythias, Amherst and a former member of the Shinimicas Senior Citizens. After retiring , Doug and Vera spent their winters in Florida and most of their summers camping in the Maritimes.
He leaves to mourn his passing; his wife, the former Vera Thompson; sons, Kencil (Carolyn) of Calgary, Sheldon (Joyce) of Lower Shinimicas; daughter, Grace (Gary) of Halifax, Faye (Dereck) of Toronto; sisters, Alice Angus of Springhill and Helen Cooke of Riverview; brothers Harold of Amherst and Warren of Moncton; ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Charles, Elwyn; sister, Laura
No visitation by request. A memorial service will be held at the Furlong-Jones Chapel (70 Church St. Amherst, NS) on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at 2 p.m. with DLM Ruth Gamble officiating. Interment of ashes in the Linden Hillside Cemetery.
No flowers by request of the family. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Immanuel United Church, the Linden Hillside Cemetery or the charity of your choice.
