Lauchlin Grant Williams, 93, Barney’s River Station, passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012 in St., Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish, surrounded by his family.
Born in Marshy Hope, he was a son of the late John Fred and Georgina (Grant) Williams.
Grant lived in Marshy Hope until 1924 when the family moved to Barney’s River Station. He worked in the lumber business from an early age. In 1949 he and his brother Lawrence bought into Williams Brothers Mill. After their father’s death, they were joined by their brother, Gerald. Grant retired in 1978 but had an active retirement, continuing to work in forestry. Grant was a member of Barney’s River Presbyterian Church, Kenzieville. He was a 72 year member of Hudson Lodge No.77, A.F. & A.M., Thorburn , a 65 year member of Norton Lodge IOOF, New Glasgow, the U.C.T. Pictonian Council No.879, New Glasgow. He was also a member of the New Glasgow City Club, and St. Andrew’s Society of Pictou County. Grant was a loving father, papa and grandpapa. He enjoyed playing auction 45s daily, having company around the house and working around the sawmill. Grant was a memorable character, and was devoted to his family.
Surviving are daughter, Nonie (Stuart) MacLeod, Sydney; son, Nichols ‘Nick’ (Linda) Williams, Barney’s River Station; sisters, Emily Donnelly, The Ponds, Margaret Fraser, New Glasgow, Adell Keays, Moncton; brothers, Gerald Williams, Barney’s River Station, Elmer Williams, Barney’s River Station; sister-in-law, Dorothy ‘Dot’ Williams, Barney’s River Station; grandchildren, Jennifer (Larry), Dawn, Jason (Alicia), Leslee (Craig), Dale (Ellen), Robert (Tanya) and Blair (Sarah); 13 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife, Alma Elizabeth Williams; brother, Lawrence Williams.
The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Hudson Masonic service 6:30 p.m., all Wednesday, Oct. 17 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 in Barney’s River Presbyterian Church with Rev. Larry Welch officiating. Private interment will be in Glen Bard Cemetery, Marshy Hope.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made in Grant’s memory to Barney’s River Presbyterian Church or the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
