Ashley Elizabeth Hicks
Ashley Elizabeth Hicks, 9, Lake Echo - It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our beautiful 9 year old daughter Ashley, at home on October 22, 2012 due to a brain tumor. Born in Halifax on June 18, 2003, she was the oldest daughter of Wade and Karen (nee Newton) Hicks of Lake Echo.
Ashley was a Grade 4 French Immersion student at Bell Park Academic Centre and a member of the First Lawrencetown Girl Guides. She loved music and art of all kinds and spent many hours creating sculptures out of clay and drawing. She loved camping and sailing, and some of her happiest times were spent each summer in her “home away from home” St. Peter’s, Cape Breton.
Besides her parents, Ashley is survived by her little sister Rachael whom she loved with all her heart. She is also survived by her grandparents, David and Elizabeth Newton (Hammonds Plains, formerly of New Glasgow) and Jack and Rena Hicks, (St. Peter’s) Ashley loved spending time with her extended family and was happiest surrounded by those she loved. Also mourning her passing are her aunts and uncles, Clinton (Donna) Hicks (Hubley), Jane Anne (Mike) McPhee (St. Margaret’s Bay), Dale (Caroline) Hicks (St. Peter’s), Tim Hicks (Porter’s Lake), Jacqueline (Leo) Roberts (Ottawa) as well as her cousins, Ben, Sam, Meghanne (Mike), Adam (Sonia) Alyson, Katelyn, Rebecca, Taylor and Shannon.
Ashley faced her illness with dignity and inspired many people with her strength and courage in the face of adversity. Her beautiful smile, quick wit and sense of humor saw her family and friends through many difficult times. She will remain forever in our hearts.
We would like to thank Dr. Simon Walling, Dr. Rob Rutledge, Dr. Bruce Crooks, Dr. Gregoire and Nurses, Irene Spears, Natalie Nymark and Grace MacConnell for their compassionate care over the past year and for trying so hard to find a cure for our daughter.
There will be no visitation. A celebration of Ashley’s life will be held at Forest Hills United Church at 2 pm on Saturday October 27, 2012. Family flowers only. In Ashley’s memory we are requesting donations to be made to The Childrens Wish Foundation (Nova Scotia Chaper).
