It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mom, Catherine Helen ‘Kate’ Penney, age 84 of Glace Bay. Kate passed away on Friday, November 9, 2012 in the An Cala Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Glace Bay, Kate was the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine (Murphy) MacDonald and was a member of St. Leo's Church in Glace Bay.
Kate will be remembered by her loving family for her love of family, she truly enjoyed the time she spent with her children, their children and her siblings. She will also be remembered for her sense of humour and her quick wit; two traits she kept until the end.
She is survived by daughters Yvonne McInnis, Glace Bay, Gail (Gerry) Rogers, Port Hood, Brenda (Kent) Groves, Florida; sons Wayne (Phyllis) and Brian (Anne) both of Glace Bay; sisters Rita Driscoll, Mary MacDonald and Winnie MacDonald all of Glace Bay; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides her parents, Kate was predeceased by her husband Michael; son Michael in infancy; daughter Margaret; daughter in-law Shelia; brothers John, Angus, Michael, Malcolm and Joseph.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. In honouring mom's wishes, there will be no public visitation or funeral mass. A private family service will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations in Kate's memory may be made to the Palliative Care Society.
