Linda MacFarlane

Linda MacFarlane

PICTOU – Linda Ann Hadley MacFarlane, 67, passed away Thursday, November 15, 2012, surrounded by her family after a short yet courageous battle with cancer, at the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit, New Glasgow.
Born in Pictou, she was the second daughter of the late Leo and Mabel (Williams) Hadley.
Linda grew up in the “Heights” of Pictou attending the Stella Maris Convent School and Pictou Academy. With the exception of residing in Boston for a short period of time as a young woman, she lived all of her life in Pictou and in Three Brooks. She married Frank MacFarlane in 1967, a marriage that would last for 45 years and one in which they would raise three children together. She was his support and created a loving home for him and their children. Linda was an employee of the Royal Bank of Canada in the 1970’s and was a board member and active volunteer in Pictou Minor Hockey and Pictou Ringette. She was also very generous of her time in support of other organizations such as the Heatherbell Girls Pipe and Drum Band and the Caribou and District Volunteer Fire Department. Linda was an avid spectator to just about any sport or event that involved any of her three children. She was the typical “hockey mom”, driving many miles and sitting wrapped in a blanket in any rink on the east coast. She loved to read and did so voraciously at times. Most of all, and what will be most missed, was her loving way of being her children’s anchor, consultant, supporter and when needed, harshest critic. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She embraced and adored all of her six grandchildren and would be visibly energized by identifying and telling stories of each one’s uniqueness and gifts. There was an incredibly nostalgic and expressed love that Linda had of Guysborough and the summers and times she spent there with her family as a young girl.
Linda is survived by her loving husband, Frank MacFarlane, Three Brooks; children, Todd (Vicki), Maine; Karla, Pictou; and Frank (Christine), Kentville; grandchildren, Chloe, Jack, Sam, Ian, Neal and Joel; aunts, Kay Williams, Guysborough; and Eleanor (Gordon) MacKay, Pictou; brother-in-law, Allan Sutherland, Caribou; brother-in-law, Keith (Judy) MacFarlane, Trenton, ON; sister-in-law, Connie MacFarlane, MacLellan’s Brook; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Linda was predeceased by her sisters, Donna (Hadley) Scherer and Patsy (Hadley) MacKeil Sutherland; brothers-in-law, Jimmy MacKeil, Ivan MacFarlane and Dave Scherer, as well as father and mother-in-law, James and Annie MacFarlane.
In honouring Linda’s wishes, there will be no visitation or church service. Linda’s remains will be cremated and internment, at Waterside Cemetery, will be at a later date. There will be a family only service at McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou on November 18th. Afterwards, family and friends are invited to gather and offer condolences at the Braeside Inn, Pictou from 2-4 p.m.
Donations in Linda’s memory may be made to the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society, or to a needy family this Christmas.
Special thanks to Dr. Farrell, Rhonda Langille and staff at the Palliative Care Unit. Your care, kindness and consideration to Linda’s needs and wishes in her final days will never be forgotten.
