Bellefontaine, Sister Teresa, the former Sister Leo Agnes, 86, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the Motherhouse, on Thursday, November 15, 2012. She was in the 63rd year of religious life.
Born in Sydney, NS, Sister Teresa was the sixth oldest of eight children of the late Leo and Agnes (Kelly) Bellefontaine.
Sister Teresa entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha in 1947. Following profession in 1952, Sister Teresa served in the Congregation’s founding ministry of household management at Bethany and St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish. Prior to entering religions life, she had worked as a nurse’s aide at St. Rita Hospital. Sister ministered in this profession at both Bethany and Little Flower Institute in Sydney. For ten years, she did home and parish visiting in Blairmore, AB.
Sister Teresa attended the Halifax Technical School, graduating in 1968 with a Diploma in Social Work. After working in this field for four years, she then studied Hospital Administration and received Diplomas in Labour Leadership from Xavier College in Sydney, and Hospital Organization & Management from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg. Sister ministered as CEO and Administrator of the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital from 1973-1991. When she retired as administrator she was missioned to Bethany as the Motherhouse Coordinator, serving for four years. In 1996, Sister moved to St. Mary’s Convent, Inverness, there she was a parish visitor. In 2005, she lived and served in part time work at both Ignatius Community, New Waterford, and Bethany, Antigonish. Sister Teresa served as Community Leader in three Martha communities.
Sister Teresa is survived by one sister, Virginia in Westmount. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters: Anne Pavlakovich and Rita Baxter; and by brothers: David, Edward, Eugene and Terrence.
The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning today, Friday, November 16th at 1:15 p.m. A Celebration of Vigil will be held this evening at 7:30. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, November 17th at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel.
