Joe Whalen, 77, of Glace Bay, passed away Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late James and Sarah (Waye) Whalen.
Joe lived in Ontario for many years where he was employed as a carpenter. Any family member travelling to Ontario always knew the doors were open at Joe’s place for as long as they wanted to stay. He loved watching boxing and UFC.
Joe is survived by two daughters, Brenda, Glace Bay, Barbara (Les) Szabo, Ontario; one son, Randy (Kimberley), Ontario; two brothers, Rannie (Marilyn), Llewellyn (Patsy), both of Glace Bay; three sisters, Lucy Jackson (Ernie), Mary Lou Billard (Art), both in Glace Bay, and Neena Fowler (Duncan, deceased), Lower Sackville. Joe is survived by two grandchildren, Stacey-Lee, Chara-Lyn and a great-grandchild, Harley.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Junior and Hank and three sisters, Velma Wadden, Ursula Hynes and Hughena MacIntyre.
There will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A private burial will be held in St. Anne’s Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Joe, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the N.S. Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Glace Bay Hospital.
