John 'Doddy' Jackson

John Jackson died Dec. 1, 2012, with his family by his side, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he was the son of the late John and Mary Jackson.
Beloved husband, father and grandfather, John ‘Doddy’ was a friend to many.
He began his career in the shipping industry. He joined the merchant navy and spent many years sailing, working his way up to chief engineer with the Canadian Coast Guard. From that experience, John’s interest in thermal energy was born and he began working in heavy industry. He worked for Saint John Ship Building and Guildford’s Insulation. He began three successful companies of his own and retired from Altair Contracting.
John helped develop the standards for the emerging insulation trade as one of the principal architects of the NB Insulators Apprenticeship Program. He was instrumental in establishing the national standards for the Contract Insulation and held senior executive positions, including president, in the Thermal Insulation Association of Canada.
John’s other career was as a guitar player and singer with several Saint John bands, the most successful was The Port City Five. He was a lifelong Celtic supporter, enjoyed reading and science, was an artist and his greatest joy came from being with friends and family.
John is survived by the love of his life, Jean, children, John (Darlene), James (Sue), Shannon (Rob) and Joseph (Alex); his grandchildren, Emily, Calum, Kassandra, Robert, Zoe, and Declan.
Cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., from 1-2 p.m. with a celebration of life to follow in the chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating.
Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Cape Breton Palliative Care Society.
