It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Ellen ‘Nellie’ Catherine MacPhee, 87, a former longtime resident of Sydney Mines, N.S. She was currently residing in Eastern Passage, N.S. and she died peacefully at the Dartmouth General Hospital on Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012.
She was born in Sydney Mines to the late Walter and Josephine (Harrietha) Doyle.
She was married to the late Neil ‘Duke’ MacPhee and they were former residents of Cottage Street. She graduated in 1943 from Nova Scotia Normal College in Truro. She went on to teach in the Sydney Mines school system and she retired in1982 from Saint Joseph’s School. She was a devoted teacher and appreciated the friendship and support of her colleagues.
Nellie was an active member of the Immaculate Conception parish throughout her life. She served as a religious educator, RCIA member and Eucharistic minister. She served on the Parish CWL for over 50 years and she continued her participation as a member of the Saint Andrew’s CWL in Eastern Passage.
She is survived by her son, Frank (Valerie Halliday) MacPhee of Rexton, N.B., and their children, Aaron MacPhee of Milton, Ont., Kelly (Colin) Catherwood of Milton. Ont., Marie MacPhee of Beijing, China, Matthew (Holly) MacPhee of Dieppe, N.B.; her daughter, Marie MacPhee of Eastern Passage, with whom she resided; her son, Ronald (Cecilia Voutier) MacPhee of Bridgewater, N.S. and their children, Jessica (Michael) Wilson of Bridgewater, N.S., Leo (Lacey Porter) MacPhee of Bridgewater, N.S.; daughter-in-law, Juanita MacPhee of Dartmouth, N.S. and her daughter Wendy Avery of Southside Boularderie. She also is survived by three great-grandchildren, Cody and Kyla Catherwood and Clara Wilson. As well, she is survived by her sisters, Betty MacLean of Sydney Mines, and Anne (Vincent) Isaac of Edmonton; her brothers, Edward (Nora) Doyle of Sydney Mines, James (Maureen) Doyle of Sydney Mines, Leo (Mary Ann) Doyle of North Sydney; and brother-in-law, Sam Lamey of Sydney Mines.
Besides her husband Neil, Nellie was predeceased by her son, Leo MacPhee, sisters, Lucy Lamey, Medie (Hector) Boutilier, Monica (Wilfred) Ramsey, Mary Josephine Doyle and brother Jack Doyle.
Visitation for Nellie MacPhee will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass to celebrate her life will take place Friday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. J.J. MacDonald officiating. The burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. A reception will be held in the Centennial Room, following the service.
