David York
(October 27, 1938 to January 3, 2013)

Our family is deeply saddened to share the news that David passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on January 3, 2013. While his death came too soon, he had a good life filled creative expression, experiences that motivated and challenged him, and family who greatly loved him. Although David was born and grew up in the United States, he is best known and remembered by the people whose lives he touched since coming to Halifax, with his wife Ella Mae, in 1971. David taught in the art education department of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design for nearly 30 years, mostly preparing art teachers for the public schools system. Over the years, he saw the department grow and evolve into a well know and respected program in Canada. David loved teaching. He felt privileged to work with students, mentoring them, nurturing them, and inspiring them. Family was very important to David. He was actively involved in raising his children, encouraging them to be risk takers, to follow their dreams, and be good people. He was very proud of their accomplishments and the fine adults they have become. David will be sadly missed by his wife of 46 years, Ella Mae, his children Amanda and Dustin, his grandchild Morgen, his family members in the United States, his friends, colleagues, former students, and by his faithful dog Reilly. It was David’s wish to be cremated and have no memorial service. A celebration of his life will be held at home for close friends and family on Saturday, January 12, at 2:00 p.m.
