Peter Kenneth “Ken” Smoth - 85, of Kentville, passed away Thursday, January 3, 2013 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, Nova Scotia. Ken was born on December 11, 1927 in Southsea, Portsmouth, England, the youngest of three sons born to Harry and Bertha Smoth. The family immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1939 when Ken was 12 years old. He worked for 4 years as a tool and die maker for the John Inglis Co., in Toronto before joining the Royal Canadian Navy where he served in both the Pacific and Atlantic Command. Ken retired as a Petty Officer after twenty and one half years service. Following his naval career, he was employed with the Public Service of Canada, serving in management positions in Edmonton and Ottawa with his last position being at Kejimkujik National Park, Nova Scotia. He was awarded the Public Service Medal after completing a combined service of 37 years. Ken was the last surviving member of his immediate family, being predeceased by his dear wife, Marion Le Etta (Orde) Smoth in July 2006 and their only child, David in December 1995. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Eric and Bernard. He is survived by his niece, Erica Dean (Smoth) in Mansfield, Queensland and nephew, John Smoth in Glenbrook, N.S. Wales, Australia, children of his brother Eric. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2013 in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia.
