Sister Joan Coffey died peacefully at the Providence Health Care, Scarborough, ON January 11, 2013 after a lengthy illness in the 64th year of religious life with the Sisters of Service. Born in Toronto, ON, one of the three children born to John Coffey and Josephine Quinlan. Predeceased by her parents and her brother Bernard, s he is survived by her sister, Sister Frances Coffey, Sister of Service and her nieces and nephews. Graduating from the Loretto Abbey High School and the University of Toronto, Joan entered the Sisters of Service in Toronto in July, 1949. Her first Sisters of Service mission assignment as a teacher was to the Peace River Country of Alberta - thus began a teaching career spanning 30 years and three provinces – Peace River and Manning, Alberta, Sinnett and Lanigan, Saskatchewan and Sheshashit and St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Retiring from teaching, she was appointed Coordinator of Refugee and Resettlement Services for the Archdiocese of Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 1966, she retired from this position and returned to Toronto to assist in the care of the senior Sisters. In her last years, she was a resident at Providence Health Care. The Sisters of Service wish to extend their gratitude for the support and care she received during her illness for the past 10 years.
