74, Charlottetown, P.E.I., formerly of Antigonish, passed away on January 16, 2013, in Charlottetown. Born in Forres, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Dorothy (Hay) MacIvor.
Dorothy taught physical education in Scotland and was an accomplished Scottish country dancer and fiddle player. In the early 1960's, Dorothy moved to Saint John, N.B., where she taught physical education at St. Vincent's Girls High School. During this time, she formed a volleyball team and coached it to several championship levels, travelling throughout the Maritimes. In 1967 she moved back to Scotland and resumed her teaching career at Girvan High School in Ayrshire. In 1971 she moved back to Canada, residing in various areas in the Maritime Provinces and for the last 27 years in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, prior to moving to P.E.I. in 2009.
In Antigonish, Dorothy worked for many years caring for children at The Children's Place Day Care. She was also very active as a member of St. James United Church where she held the post of UCW President for many years.
Dorothy was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and a devoted friend to the many that knew her.
Dorothy is survived by William (Bill) Muirhead, Antigonish; son, David, his wife Tammy (nee Kelly) and their sons, Kallum and Ben, Charlottetown, P.E.I.; son, John and his wife, Melinda Coleman, Waterloo, Ontario; brother, Norman and his wife, Maureen, of Forres, Scotland.
Funeral service for the late Dorothy Muirhead will be held in St. James United Church, Antigonish, on Saturday, January 19, at 2 p.m. with Reverend Peter Smith presiding.
