Date de naissance : 22 août 1924

Date de décès : 22 décembre 2012

LAIRD, Read Alexander, age 88, of Swift Current and formerly of Scotsguard, SK, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, December 22, 2012. Read was born the youngest of three sons, on August 22, 1924, to William and Cassie Laird. He received his education at Austinville and Scotsguard schools and graduated from Shaunavon High School. He also attended business College in Calgary, returning home after one year to farm with his family. In 1958, he married Joan Colvin, a teacher from England. After marriage, they continued to operate the family farm - which had been homesteaded in 1909 by Read’s father and uncle - while raising a family of two boys and two girls and renovating the original farm house. Read was a lifelong farmer and a man of many talents and interests. He worked for the local telephone company and as a spare bus driver. When he wasn’t busy working, he served his community as the Reeve of Bone Creek Municipality, President of Shaunavon Co-op Board, longtime member of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, and on various local church and school boards. He was an avid sports enthusiast, particularly hockey and ball. In his younger years he played with several local teams. Later he coached his son’s hockey teams in Simmie. Music was always close to Read’s heart. He was well known throughout the Southwest as the drummer with the Instow Orchestra. They played for many socials and wedding dances. Together Read and Joan shared a love of dancing. They spent many happy hours square and round dancing. Representing the Southwest area of the Saskatchewan Square and Round Dance Federation Board, they traveled throughout the province making many new friends. Above all Read cherished his family. He always found time to become involved with their interests and activities and never turned down the opportunity to teach them new skills - be it learning to skate, ride a bike, drive, or milk a cow. He followed the careers and accomplishments of his grandchildren with pride. He loved people and life, and will be sadly missed. Read is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Joan; his family, David (Debbie) and children, Carmen Blyth (Cliff - Trenton and Bryce), Erika, Alexis and David; James (Mercy) and children, Morgan, Rebecca and Alex; Carol Forget and children, Mathieu, Tyler and Rachelle; Heather (Bruce) Sorenson and children, Greg, Derrick and Cole; brother-in-law, Arthur Colvin and family in Port Elizabeth, South Africa; as well as several nieces and nephews. Read was predeceased by his parents, William and Cassie; his brothers, Bill and David (pilot officer killed in action in Germany, 1944), his in-laws, Arthur and Annie Colvin; and by a nephew, Robert Laird. A Celebration of Life Service was held on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 2:00 pm from the First United Church, Swift Current, SK with Rev. Sharon Ferguson-Hood officiating. Memorial donations made to the Parkinsons Society or the Canadian Cancer Association would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home.
