It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Mary Sarah ‘Sadie’ MacIntyre at the Northside Guest Home on Jan. 20, 2013.
In 2008 she was diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia a disease which gradually robbed her of many of the abilities she once possessed and caused deterioration both mentally and physically. Sadie was born Sept. 8, 1930, the eldest of five children to Roderick and Margaret MacLean in Reserve Mines, N.S. She lived there for a time and moved to Big Beach at a young age where she remained until she met the love of her life, Hugh MacIntyre who she married in 1948 and moved to Boisdale. Sadie ran the post office in Boisdale until after the birth of her first child. She was an avid swimmer, an excellent skater, and generally loved the outdoors. She and Hughie welcomed many people to their home from near and far. You never left without a good cup of tea, some homemade bread, tea biscuits and if you were so inclined a little drink and lots of music and laughter. Sadie loved to bake and in later years experiment with her own recipes. She kept her home in excellent condition always painting and wallpapering when she deemed it was time for a change. If there was a wedding, baby shower, anniversary or other special occasion in the parish, Sadie was always called upon to write a rhyming address sometimes at very short notice and pulled it off in spectacular fashion, and always with a touch of humour.
She was a fluent Gaelic speaker and kept recordings of Gaelic songs from as early as 1964.She often sang with her mother who was well known as a Gaelic singer in Cape Breton and beyond. Sadie travelled to Scotland and with her mother was part of the Cape Breton Gaelic Show at the Expo in Vancouver. Left to mourn her loss are daughter, Peggy MacIntyre (Dave Tombs), Shenacadie; and sons, Michael R. (Gemma), Wasaga Beach, Ont., and Daniel Joseph, Boisdale. She is also survived by sisters, Mary MacIsaac, Boisdale, Mildred Stolarski, Langley, B.C.; brother, John R. (Mae) MacLean, Boisdale; and six nieces. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her sister, Helen Gillis and brothers-in-law, John MacIsaac, John Stolarski, Bert Gillis and nephew, Roddie MacIsaac. Remains will rest at St. Andrew Church, Boisdale, today, Thursday, Jan. 24, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at St. Andrew Church, with Fr. Paul Abbass officiating.
