Charles Edmund Peck, 91, passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, at his home in Catalone.
Born in Louisbourg, he was the son of the late Thomas and Frances (Lamont) Peck. As a young man he worked as a merchant seaman, at the Sydney Steel Plant and the S&L Railroad.
He was a veteran of the Second World War having served overseas with the Canadian Army as a military policeman. He was a professional boxer and appeared in many bouts in the Maritimes. In later life, he was inducted into the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame.
Charlie served as a policeman in the town of Louisbourg for 17 years and was chief for most of that time period. He became a property assessor for the Province of Nova Scotia working in the Sydney area and was director for Inverness County and retired as director for Halifax County.
He was the Commanding Officer of the Louisbourg Sea Cadet Corp for a number of years during which time they were named best corps in Canada for under one hundred boys. He formed the Navy League Cadets and was C.O. for some time. At one time he managed to put 60 cadets on a train, taking them to Expo ‘67 in Montreal and returning them to their families in one piece. He very much enjoyed working with the young people of Louisbourg; over the years he got them to the Glace Bay forum each Saturday morning no matter what the road conditions were. His middle and last years were spent in Catalone where he enjoyed farming and had a special love for horses. He made his farm productive and green. Recently Charlie was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, the former Camilla Browner; sons, Skip (Mary), Vernon (Gayle), Stephen (Martha), Mark (Gina); daughters, Anne (George), Janet (Donald); one brother, George, 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his son, David; brothers, Bernard, Tom, Frank, Jim, Cliff and his brother, Frankie in childhood and sisters, Mary, Stacia and Rose.
Cremation has taken place. Interment will be held at a later date.
